What exactly is on this website?

This website has a range of educational aids.  There are task sheets for download, an assessment calendar, a forum for questions and homework and finally a wiki for collaborative resource creation.

What is this website for?

This website is an educational aid.  It is designed to supplement classroom study and homework.  It is not compulsory for students to join or interact on this website.  Many students, however, enjoy and benefit from using online educational resources, including this one.

Why should I contribute?  What's in it for me?

There are many students contributing to the content on this website.  You can use all of that information to help your own study.  In turn, contributing yourself helps yourself and others in the community to learn.  If every student in just your class wrote one line each in the Wiki - each child would get a page of notes in return.

Can I choose my Name or Username?

No.  Your username enables us to control who joins and contributes to the site's forum and wiki.  Without this control undesirable users may join and this is unsafe for our users.  Using your real name also makes you think twice about what you post and helps greatly in eliminating bullying.

Can I become a part of the Admin team?

Why don't you have a bookmark section?

Actually we have several.  Each subject area in the wiki has, or could have, its own bookmark page.  The genre pages in the English section have a bookmark page each.

Can my friend from another school join this website?

No.  Only students from NLSC can be members here.  Managing the website would be far too difficult should students from other schools join too.  Sorry :(

How do you ensure only NLSC students can join?

I have an up-to-date list of all students with their name and username.  I crosscheck every new member.  It only takes seconds and it ensures that only NLSC students and staff can be using this website.  Any user not on my list has their profile/membership deleted.

Do I have to be a member of this website to get good marks in class?

Certainly not.  Every chance of success and excellence is provided for in the classroom and with your homework.  This website is just a community for those that choose to do their homework online.  No child is disadvantaged by choosing not to use this website.  However, I do believe students can benefit greatly from this website.

I can't.  I am at the mercy of the website's users when it comes to this issue.  However it will be clear to all who put the material there (thanks to the 'realname policy' of membership process).  This is a major preventative measure because most content vandalism online is done under a pseudonym.  In addition, when I login every day I can see at a glance what new content has been uploaded and who uploaded it.  This means any offensive material won't be there long and the user that put it there will be identified.

How can I get a picture next to my name on the home page?

You need to sign up at Gravatar.  It is a free service that provides avatars on select websites.  Every website that uses gravatars will display the picture you upload to your profile at the gravatar website.

So why are you using Twitter?

Twitter is a social networking device and a messaging device.  Many companies and businesses use it to promote their product and keep their clients informed.  The latter is why I am using it.  NLSC students that use Twitter can keep up to date with the community website without visiting it and logging in.
