It is hard keeping up with the Jones' in the world of computing.  The urge to buy the latest hardware, gadget or software can be powerful.  Buying industry standard software packages can be extremely expensive especially if you are a student.  But in the software world there are viable alternatives.   You can use cheaper software from smaller companies or you can try freeware.  Just remember that although the cheaper or freeware alternatives may work a little differently, chances are you are still learning skills that you can apply to the 'industry standard' software when you finally get work in your industry of choice.

An example of these freeware alternatives?  Thats easy.  Microsoft Office can be replaced by StarOffice or OpenOffice.  Photoshop can be replaced by The Gimp.  The list of alternatives is as long as the list of expensive software.

Check out this blog entry for starters.

Whirlpool, Australia's premier technology forum also has a page of links for freeware.

And then use google.  Use the words 'freeware' or 'open source'.  Or type in the name of the expensive software you want followed the word 'alternative'.  Eg. - 'photoshop alternative'.

Good Luck
